Dear Kansas Psychologist-
Kansas Psychological Association sincerely hopes you have had a healthy, safe and prosperous 2011. For many Kansas psychologists, 2011 has been a year of rebuilding or working as hard as ever to maintain their practices/employment. To follow is a brief description of many of the reasons Kansas Psychological Association encourages you to renew not only your membership but your active participation in the Kansas Psychological Association. Each month, KPA advances psychology in Kansas by providing valuable member services, promotes psychologists as the premier mental health professionals in Kansas, and practices vigilance in the defense of our profession and the protection of our clients. Here are just a few of the issues and activities in which KPA has engaged actively on your behalf:
- Protecting Psychologists’ autonomy as substance abuse treatment providers during the development of the licensed abuse counselor credential at the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board;
- Providing state-of-the-art telepsychology ethics training for Kansas psychologists, in collaboration with the APA Insurance Trust;
- Creating a weekly members-only email newsletter providing important information and links relevant to your daily practice as a provider in Kansas;
- Providing opportunity to discuss the latest developments in our profession through our annual conference, including interactive discussion of APA’s treatment guidelines efforts, and training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
- Working in collaboration with American Psychological Association in regards to the BCBS of Kansas City pay cut for psychologists
- Working closely with APA in regards to federal advocacy programs, especially Medicare cuts and adding Psychologist as “doctors”
- Attending APA Practice Organization’s annual State Leadership Conference in March in order to gain new ideas, connect with other professionals, and advocate for psychologists at the federal level
KPA board members and members like you work every day to protect and advance the practice of psychology in Kansas and the clients who so deeply need our expertise. Our need for your financial support for these activities is clear, but our need for your active participation is even greater. The issue of treatment guidelines alone stands to influence the care of our clients and the practice of our profession for decades to come, and KPA wants and needs your voice in this matter and so many others at the State and national level.
Please give thoughtful consideration to renewing your membership in KPA, but especially to renewing your active participation. Your energy and involvement will drive practice and policy in Kansas, and we hope to see you on board!
Sincerely,
Theresa Coddington, PhD – President 2011
Adam Buhman-Wiggs, PhD – President 2012
